What are the advantages to buying meat like this?

There are several perceived advantages to buying a steer for freezer beef which vary from person to person. One reason is that you can cut out the "middle man." You can purchase a steer directly from the farmer and you can hire a meat processer to cut your meat to your specifications. The price paid per pound is generally less than if the meat is purchased at a grocery store. Another reason is quality. Although excellent quality meat can be purchased at a grocery store, it will be expensive and the quality will vary. All meat from Lindborg Beef is high quality meat. Yet another reason is that you will be supporting local agriculture and local businesses as you buy your meat directly from the farm.

Why would I want to buy such a large quantity of beef?

Many people like to have all their meat for the year (or however long they prefer) on hand in their freezer. It makes grocery shopping easier and it gives peace of mind to know that you have a stock of food in your home and paid for.

Who can buy your beef?

Anyone that is willing to travel to northwestern Indiana. Most of my customers are from the LaPorte County area but I have had customers from the Chicago area. I only deliver to slaughterhouses in the northern Indiana area, so potential customers should keep in mind that they will have to be able to get their meat home while it stays frozen.

How much will it cost?

I sell steers by live weight. The price fluctuates with the market price. I usually tell people that it will cost them around $1200 to $1600 to buy the steer. Each steer will generally provide approximately 500 pounds of beef. Keep in mind that these numbers do vary and most slaughterhouses will charge a couple hundred dollars for processing. It is a lot of money - but it is also a lot of beef. Please call for more details.

How can I pay?

I will accept cash or checks. Checks should be make payable to Zach Lindborg. Keep in mind this is only for the animal, you will also have to pay the slaughterhouse for their services.

I am interested, but I do not have room for this much beef and I do not want to spend this much money.

This is not necessarily a problem. Although, I must sell the entire steer at one time, I am willing to split it among more than one person. If there are enough people at one time you can buy a half, a quarter, or even less. I would prefer if the customer finds people to split the animal, but I am willing to help. Keep in mind that if you split an animal, all people involved must agree on the same slaughterhouse.

Can I buy ready processed and wrapped meat from Lindborg Beef?

No, at this time I cannot sell processed meat, I only sell live steers. I have considered the possibility of selling processed meat, but I do not know if the customer base exists to support the time and costs to do so. If you are interested in buying high quality local ready processed meat, please feel free to contact me. If I have enough interest I might look into the possibility of selling packaged meat or I can give you the name someone who does.

I do not have any way to transport a steer to market - What am I going to do with a live steer?

This is not a problem, I will haul your steer to the local slaughterhouse of your choice. If you wish, I can make an appointment to deliver the steer to whichever slaughterhouse you choose, I will deliver the steer on that day, and I will give them your name. All you will have to do is call with your cutting instructions and pick up your processed meat when it is ready.

What cuts of meat can I get?

This question can be best answered by the slaughterhouse, but you will always be able to get whatever you want within the parameters of a steer's anatomy. At least one third of your meat will be ground beef and you can choose which steaks and roasts you want. The slaughterhouse will grind what you don't want into ground beef. The slaughterhouse will generally let you choose how thick you want your steaks, how big you want your roasts, and other specifications. Keep in mind that you can only get what an animal has: For example, you cannot get 500 pounds of prime rib from one steer, but you can get roughly 20 pounds.
This diagram gives a general idea of the types of meat available from a typical steer.

Are your steers given artificial growth hormones?

Yes, I implant most of my steers with artificial growth hormones which are totally safe. I believe in using all available technology to produce the highest quality product for the best price. If you have any questions about this please feel free to contact me and I will be happy to give you more information.

I have never purchased meat this way before, I still feel uncertain about the process.

That's not a problem. Don't hesitate to contact me and I will be happy to answer any additional questions you may have. Technically, I am only responsible for the sale and delivery of a live animal to the point of delivery, and anything done with the animal past that point is the responsibility of the buyer, but I will help new customers through the process. I can recommend a good slaughterhouse and I can answer questions about the process.
